Filmmaker profile: Anthony Rivero Stabley

Last year at the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival Anthony Rivero Stabley showed his film “Marta’s Sex Tape”. Ever since I saw him on the film festival’s myspace page I knew I wanted to program his film. It was at a time that celebrity sex tapes were exploding and the film asked an important question: “Why not me?” If a celebrity can become rich and famous off a sex tape than why can’t I.

The result was a film that entertains and entertains again, yet at the same time you feel a little sorry for Marta. She seems lost and even struggling. She is an artist and needs the money that she hopes to make from the film to pay her bills. Like too many talented and artistic people out there they walk a tightrope between their art and their life.

I recently received an email from a friend of mine that almost made me want to cry. He was the best painter I have ever met in my life. The memory of his work has inspired me to this day. He found me and the film festival on facebook and sent me a message. I was so happy to hear form him, I had often thought about him and was sure he was a famous internationally renowned painter by now, in fact I was a little jealous. In his email he told me that he had given up painting I can only assume because it didn’t pay the bills. This is where you have to make that leap of faith, where are you going to focus your time and energy? Are you going to give up on your dream of being an artist or struggle to do what fulfills you creatively? It sounds easy but it is a difficult choice.

Please help Anthony continue to live his dream and passion by watching his film and come back to this blog and comment on it.

The key to making a great film. Passion.

Still from the film "Saila" World Premiere at 2008 Minneapolis Unerground Film Festival

To often in life and in art people want to try and take the safe way, the easy and risk free path that will grant them security and allow them to live a life without struggle. For filmmaking as with any art that attitude will sound the death toll for a work of any meaning. A film that does not take chances will not be succesful in a film festival. When making the project a filmmaker who tries to take the easy way out will inevitably fail. That is why the Minneapolis Underground film Festival was born. We are searching for films that do not take the easy way out, that strive and work to create something new, different and exiting. In short we are looking for films that have passion. We don’t want you to submit your film if you were never truly able to give yourself to it. If you were to scared to embrace your project fearing it would hurt or destroy you. We are not looking for lifeless art. Let us see your work and amaze us so we can amaze our audiences.

The truth about submitting your film to the 2009 Minneapolis Underground Film Festival

In today’s constantly evolving video revolution more and more independent underground films are been made by unseen media revolutionaries, however most of these unsung heroes of the media world are content to let their work stagnate on Youtube where it will never get see or appreciated by a real audience. Why? Because along with the great responsibility that comes from being an artist also comes fear and insecurity. Today’s filmmakers lack the courage to show their work to an audience because they fear rejection they lack the courage to stand up and have their voices heard. This is why the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival was formed. To give voice to those who seek to express themselves and have their work seen. Filmmakers this is a call to you: Submit your film have your work seen and have the courage to show your art to world!

There is a talented new breed of filmmaker out there, a breed of filmmaker that does not play by the established rules, that bridles against the crap they are spoon fed on TV on a daily basis. This new breed of filmmakers realizes that the technology is here all it takes is a new vision, a new way of looking at things to truly showcase your talents. The subject matter can be anything that is why we have freedom of speech. It takes the filmmaker to stand up and proclaim I am an artist and I am going to show the world my vision. However many or most do not because they are so used to feeling the pain of rejection. Most film festivals are run by collusion and corruption and the films are judged not by artists but by politicians and horse traders. It is time to stand up and reclaim our rights as artists to express our vision without fear of the mainstream.

My challenge to all filmmakers out their is simple: SUBMIT YOUR FILM TO THE MINNEAPOLIS UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL

SUBMIT TO MUFF 09
SUBMIT TO MUFF 09 and have your work treated with the respect it deserves.

What have you got to lose? Absolutely nothing and everything to gain. We do do not put limitations on the films we accept we are not looking for certain subject matter or genre. I will tell you what we are looking for: ART. The ability to express yourself without fear and to touch others in a way few have ever seen or felt. Is this you? Is this the filmmaker who will dare to submit to the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival? We are waiting to hear from you and we are anxiously anticipating watching your work. So do not delay submit your film today.
